What is gis?
A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes.
DPS has been doing maps and data warehousing with Geographical Information System (GIS). On top of GIS, we are collecting information such as House Numbers, Shop Data and Retail Outlet database and POI information.
Benefits of GIS
1. Cost savings resulting from greater efficiency.
2. Better decision making.
3. Improved communication.
4. Better geographic information recordkeeping.
5. Managing geographically.
POI and House Number Data Collection
POI and Address Data Collection and Delivery Flowchart
Regarding administrative boundaries, we have Yangon and Mandalay city’s townships and wards as we have been making the street directories of both cities since 2003.
Regarding Administrative boundaries of state, region, town, village Myanmar Information Management Unit of UNDP has published free (Open) datasets after getting the gazetted notifications from Ministry of Home Affairs. DPS has own data set of those area shape files before MIMU was even formed, from Myanmar Survey Department but the granularity is very coarse.
DPS concentrate more on in-city data collection such as address database, POIs, Street-view 360 pic, road-side shops data with picture. We are ESRI data vendor and our data was purchased by United States Government (through ESRI).
